An organic farmhouse for an organic farm. Driven by this resounding ideology, Yash Farms was designed with a holistic vision of sustainability implemented at both micro and macro levels.

Nestled among lush foliage and greenery, this earthen edifice blends in beautifully with its surroundings. Primarily a homestay and a residence for the clients, Yash Farms has also been frequently used as a set for several video and photoshoots and has even hosted corporate events such as team-building workshops. This multi-use functioning has been made possible by the flexible planning of spaces punctuated by its seamless transitions from indoor to outdoor. A clear demarcation of public and private is executed through the use of ancillary buffer spaces and semi open area. Aiding this spatial organization is an inspiration from the vernacular; a quaint verandah welcoming one upon entry, surrounding a green open courtyard. As heart of the structure, it not only provides light and ventilation but also contributes towards the indoor comfort of the structure.

This project also focuses on other similar passive techniques that improve the climate performance of the structure and reduce the need for daytime lighting and air conditioning. The rammed earth and mud-brick walls, a derivative of traditional techniques in mud, are a true display of innovative use that challenges the pre-conceived notions of earth as a primitive material.

Adapted to present contexts to improve their performance, they not only add to the organic colour palette and aesthetic, but also display excellent thermal regulatory properties. Repurposed antique wooden door frames and columns are a reminiscence of the beauty of traditional wood crafts that bring in a depth to the aesthetic qualities of the design. This palette is further wonderfully complemented by the natural stone flooring.

Alternative roofing systems such as sloping roofs and the filler slab that uses clay highlights limit the use of steel and concrete. This carefully selected material palette drives home the message of local sourcing of materials that lowers the embodied energy of the building.

‘Think local, act local’ almost becomes the mantra for this project, wherein the idea of sustainability is not only confined to the physicality of the structure but goes beyond to address its impact on society as a whole. By sourcing local it contributes to the development of local economies and by upskilling and training existing local labor in alternative techniques of construction impart new skills and livelihood pathways to the local communities.

This 1.2-acre property incorporates several other sustainable practices at the master plan level that only further enhances the operational efficiency of the structure. Rainwater harvesting, wastewater managements, biogas and solar energy have all been considered in its planning. They bring down the overall running cost of the structure, optimizing on its available resources and aiming towards a net-zero energy functioning.
