Located on the Dongaon Road in Solapur, Vithai is truly a dream home. With modern design exteriors and well-thought of architectural plan, it harmoniously showcases the bled of modern western framework and splashes of rich indian heritage.

Intending to keep the space nestled in greenery, the house is built in the middle of two different gardens - a handsomely landscaped front garden and a dense kitchen garden full of big trees and vegetable patches. The clients’ love for greenery is evident in the fact that the maximum area of the plot is allocated to the gardens.

Ar. Amar Nagmode (Studio AAD) talks about how the house has been designed keeping in mind the climatic conditions of Solapur. “Solapur is hot and humid most of the year. So I have tried to devise a design that promotes passive cooling by  providing cavity walls, adding necessary shading devices and giving larger openings on the nothern side,” he says.

Doused in soft hues of blues and neutrals, this living room is a symphony of calmness. The furniture is designed in a way that it can be easily rearranged in case of entertaining. The sofa chairs can be individually set or lined up to form a long curved sofa that is perfect for lounging. The modern chairs, the nestling centre table and the soft rug lend the dark hues of antique gold, browns and creams to the room. The pop of blue on the curtains lining the window and the French doors ties the colour scheme together.

The living room has modest partitions that separate the open space without being constrictive. The chequer patterned wall has an ingenious feature of a rotating painting. The cobalt blue hue of these partitions complements the warm tone of the wood beautifully.

The passage that leads from the living room to the dinning area (and subsequently the staircase to the upper level of the house), again adopts a design that ensures that the space feels open and airy. The recessed display with spot lighting is a great way to segue into the dinning area.

A dining table is where the whole family convenes and talks; that is what makes it such an important part of the house. This dining area is spacious, welcoming and elegant. The slightly abstract shape of the chairs, the curved and criss-crossed legs of the table, the spiralling pendant lighting as well as the paintings on the wall – they are all a testament to the incorporation of the modern contemporary style. The proud glass cabinet is great for displaying beautiful crockery, while the cupboard below the pristine white shelf gives additional storage options.

The Pooja area is a true imitation of a temple with its intricately carved banisters and raised platform. The serene white stone used as a base offsets the rich brown of the wood. With storage given underneath the pedestal, it utilizes space and raises the idol to a height perfect for offering daily prayers. The pooja area itself is a great utilization of the space between the elevation of the staircase leading up to the upper level of the house.

The first floor guest bedroom has an adorable window nook that can be used for lounging, for reading or simply enjoying a cup of coffee on a rainy day! The huge bed employs most of its wall to look like one giant headboard with different sizes and colours of panelling.

The guest room is also equipped with a desk and a storage unit on the wall opposite the bed. The desk, storage unit as well as the bedside tables are kept floating and minimal in design. The half-wall wood panel behind the desk and the storage unit makes the white surfaces pop.

This master bedroom on the ground floor has the bed as the focal point. The panelled headboard seamlessly projects the bedside table and contrasts charmingly with the beige tiled wall. The huge window allows ample natural light and air, making the room feel snug and cosy.

The kids room on the first floor is a splash of colours with the base colours of woody browns, whites and greys. The room borrows the chequer patterns used in the common areas of the house and refashions it to become over-the-bed displays, cubby hole wall for storing the ample toys that kids have, the centre display in the kid’s study table as well as the partition. The slightly curved wall behind the bed breaks the clean lines of the design, lending it a quirky twist. The room is smartly contrived to adapt to the kid’s needs as they grow up.

Adorned in earthy palettes and quirky arches, this first floor bedroom is an oasis of calmness. The textured arches behind the bed makes for an extraordinary headboard while also becoming the focal point. The furniture is kept minimal with the shapes and textures being the highlight. The arches are also replicated in the study, the TV unit and the walls of the room.

This master bedroom is also equipped with a beautiful attached balcony. The comfy swing, the red bricked wall borrowed from the exterior of the house and the glass railings makes this space a haven for relaxing and winding down after a long day.

“Designing and planning a client’s dream home is always an exhilarating challenge. Vithai was no different. Understanding the client’s need for minimalist sophistication and designing an aesthetically pleasing as well as functionally efficient home has truly been an honour. The journey of sketching it on paper and seeing it come to life is one of the best feelings,” concludes Ar. Amar Nagmode – principle architect and owner of Studio AAD.
