Set amidst the background of the industrial background of textiles, locks and agricultural machinery, Dindigul is a city in the heart of the southern part of Tamil Nadu. Dindigul is an ancient settlement, with many dynasties ruling over millennia, creating a rich history in the city. Set against this background, the Yarn House is a residence they created, weaving a beautiful space for a joint family who are in the spinning and textile business. This residence is situated in their mill compound, serving as a gathering space for the entire family.

Since the needs of the client was to create a space that was a meeting point for the entire family, they kept the design intentionally inclusive and yet catering to the needs of the individual members. Privacy was a big point as the residence is located in the compound of their spinning and textiles factory, and they wanted the home to transport them into a cozy and familiar space as soon as they entered. At the studio, their design and inspiration leans on the environment and history of the space they are designing. The Yarn House is an amalgamation of the clients story and profession, dindiguls background and their imagination.

A spanning lavish home, with 5 bedrooms, a home gym, pool intersected by communal spaces and gathering points all connected to a focal courtyard which floods in natural light throughout the day. The spaces are linked through the design elements, with a contemporary take on traditional motifs and elements. The principal architect and designer, Karthikeyan Padmanabhan, is a man of few words. His work speaks for itself and the Yarn House is an example of this. The design and spatial quality of the residence is immersed in the details with each room designed in a distinct yet succinct character with natural light, cross ventilation that brings the residence alive.

One of their favourite elements at the yarn house is the detailing on the garden walls. They had custom granite murals commissioned with abstract floral motifs which add depth and texture to the garden. The landscape was done by Tamara Garden Centre, a nursery and landscape platform based out Coimbatore as well. They continued the etched motifs across the elevation of the property, with back lit custom lighting which transforms the space in the night.

The next space they would like to highlight is the courtyard, which is the focal point around which the entire residence is designed. They see multiple textures and elements at play here, with intricate wooden panelling, stone etched custom murals, gold etched floral elements and a patterned inlay flooring that describes the rich material and texture palette.

They played with a lot of elements in the outdoor parts of the property, with interesting murals and custom metal panels, to add character and tie the narrative of the space together. Each area and space at the Yarn house is unique and weaves a narrative. Each design element aids in path finding, frames a space and sets the context for the mood and utility of the space.

The Yarn house is a beautiful home for a family of industrialists and entrepreneurs who were looking for a getaway space to gather and break bread with their loved ones. Set against the background of the hot, dusty terrain of Dindigul with its glorious history and industrial background, the Yarn house is a sweet respite.
