'The Arched Penthouse' is an apartment converted into a luxurious penthouse. Situated in a residential area near a major highway, the interior design of this apartment presented several challenges. With most spaces predefined, as is typical in apartment layouts, the goal was to evoke the feel of a bungalow within the apartment.

The 4000 sq. ft. space has been transformed into a lavish 4 BHK penthouse. This was achieved by removing most of the internal walls to open up the rigid grid of the original apartment. Instead, furniture that offers storage and display functions now serves as partitions between spaces.

The Design Alley aims to reflect the user's roots in the design. This penthouse is designed for a close-knit family comprising a middle-aged couple and their two young sons. The family prefers a low-profile lifestyle, and a calm ambiance is created using subtle colours. To break the monotony of rectangular spaces, arches were incorporated into various areas. The 'Arch' becomes a recurring theme, giving the design a unique identity and rhythm. This rhythm is enhanced by a pastel colour palette to achieve harmony. Subtle brass accents are included in the design to add a touch of tradition to the contemporary setting.

The entrance lobby boasts veneer panelling and a warmly illuminated ceiling. The main arched door is adorned with a brass grill and nameplate. Arched mouldings and grooves on the panelling and ceiling subtly suggest the design theme, creating an inviting ambiance. To expand the living area, the adjacent guest bedroom was integrated into the living room. A wooden staircase in the dining area leads to the upper-floor lounge, which opens onto the semi-covered central terrace and is flanked by bedrooms. The wall between the living room and the kitchen-dining area was removed, replaced by a storage and two-way display partition unit, maintaining visual connection between both spaces.

The kitchen, centred around an island cooking platform, allows the cook to stay connected with the rest of the house. The dining area, transformed into a double-height space, provides access to the upper floor, enhancing ventilation. A large chandelier in this area adds grandeur, and a beautiful wooden staircase ascends to the upper floor from behind the dining table.

To enhance privacy and increase storage, the wall between the two bedrooms was removed, creating a small lobby that provides access to both rooms. This lobby is lined with discreet storage furniture and ends with a veneer panel featuring arched grooves. The master bedroom, decorated with a soothing colour palette, is adorned with wallpaper and paintings and includes a cosy seating nook by the sunken window.

A sleek wooden staircase in the dining area leads to the upper-level lounge, which opens onto the semi-covered terrace at the front. The two bedrooms designed for the young sons feature an island bed with a study space at the rear, offering a unique layout. These rooms include plantation nooks and provide full views of the terrace on the east side.

Half of the upper level consists of the terrace, located along the eastern side, offering stunning views of the mountains on one side and the city skyline on the other. The middle section of the terrace is covered with an elegant arched pergola.

The goal of creating a home that is grand yet understated has been realised through straightforward layouts and comfortable design details. The pastel colour palette is soothing, and fluted textures enhance the ambiance. The arches and softened details further elevate the design. Incorporating traditional elements like arches and brass accents throughout lends a vintage feel, despite the contemporary and chic setting. Thus, 'The Arched Penthouse' stands out as a design that exudes simplicity and harmony.
