This residential project in A‘bad, India by Hitesh Mistry & associates is designed with the main prerequisite of the client which was to follow all vastu directions. Each placement of space in the planning of the house is in sync with the plan of the vastu purusha mandala.
Apart from main spaces the internal layouts that include location of beds, wardrobes-direction of door and staircase even the wc position in bathrooms. Are in tune with correct energy flows. Main plot entrance(N), house entrance(N) and the waterbody (N), basement (E), kitchen (SE), location of staircase (S), pooja room (NE), master bedroom (SW), kids’ room (E & W).

The planning of the house sits on the square grid 54x54 ft. The biggest challenge while designing the house was to create visually appealing architectural volume while keeping structural columns in place and a rigid space planning layout as per vastu grid-that required specific locations. Since they had complete aesthetic freedom, they could bring out an interesting material palette and architectural facades.

Their approach in design was modern contemporary and getting rid of stereotype imitation of a conventional vastu defined home where the 9 grids restrict the free-flowing creativity of design. The Jain client being deep rooted spiritually wished to have simple modern minimal and most importantly easy to maintain house where landscape wood flawlessly connects indoor outdoor spaces. This site nests in a prime, hi-end residential area with a road facing plot in a society.

The north and east facing elevation design in a way to break the monotony of the grid created by vastu planning. Upon entering through the double height entrance door, one gets an uninterrupted vision of the house with the pockets of natural lights entering into the central double height living room area that is brahmasthan of the house. Where all the spaces of the house connect here. The zoning around it has been done which provides visual and physical connections internally. The projecting balcony with the full width openings gives beautiful green views of the surrounding.

The material palette kept minimal- white Italian marble reflects the natural light while bright furniture colors add charm to the interior. Following the client religion Jainism all the material used in the house area is cruelty free and no living soul. Even the wood used in interiors and exteriors is processed. The full heighted glazed openings provide transparency and a blend of natural light with seamless views of surrounding landscape.

The material and colors of custom made Italian imported modern designed furniture follow the same rules. Everything from the ceiling-lighting fixtures-bathroom faucets and accessories-  wardrobe systems-door handles-air conditioning systems- kitchen appliances- art (specific colors and geometry) are designed and peculiarly chosen-to add luxury in one’s lifestyle.

The connections like lily pond right next to the main door and green verandah next to the dining opening gives blooming green views seeing landscape whenever you enter or exit. The aim was to design a timeless dwelling, keeping all 3 aspects of landscape, architecture and interior.
