As architects entrusted with this project, our primary objective was to create a structure that would honor the site's intrinsic essence and integrate our clients' collective vision. Our pursuit was to embrace nature and create a harmonious blend between the interior and exterior. From the moment we set foot on the site, this expansive 7-acre estate’s inherent beauty resonated deeply with us. This farmhouse was conceived with the intent of providing a retreat for three close friends who enjoy their shared weekend getaways.
The underlying vision for this 4800 square-feet farmhouse entailed the creation of a space that seamlessly fuses tradition with modernity. Our intention was to optimize the utilization of communal spaces while accommodating solitude and personal retreat. At every vantage point, we discovered new elements, and hence the architectural plan was tilted 45° to the make entrance towards the northeast to ensure no two rooms offered identical vistas. We sourced the finest Tandur tiles from Telangana, Athangudi tiles from Tamil Nadu, and Mangalore tiles for the roofs, while stucco finishes added to the overall aesthetic.
The spatial arrangement represents a deconstructed interpretation of the quintessential Indian courtyard house. From the sloping roofs to the 60' x 30' central courtyard, the verandah, the living space, the expansive open kitchen and dining areas, and a designated work-from-home area, every aspect was thoughtfully considered for a cohesive and inviting space. Each bedroom has a private courtyard, serving as an idyllic retreat.
The first floor reveals yet another dimension, featuring a home theatre and entertainment room that seamlessly transitions into an attached covered terrace offering panoramas of the one-acre Miyawaki forest and 0.75 acres of human-made lake. This space has been designed to accommodate the dynamics of yoga and meditation in the mornings, or intimate gatherings in the evenings.
Within the confines of a five-month timeline, we took on the task of completing this farmhouse, using cold-formed steel prefab construction technology. While this approach presented certain design constraints, we navigated the challenges of preserving the authenticity of the design.
This project holds a special place in our hearts, as it afforded us a sense of gratification to design with such a refined brief and an extraordinary site. Seldom do projects dare to push the boundaries to safeguard the integrity of the location, making this project a truly memorable one for us.
