The name Neralu, a Kannada word, man’s shade, shadow or shelter. The house is designed around the concept of light and shade with the idea of bringing the outside in. Located in a dense residential suburb, the house sits on main double road, offering no significant views but the Moving traffic Hence the idea was to create an introverted space that offers a dramatic experience, recreating the outdoors inside.

The visual character of the house is a tropical modern approach with a material palette of stone and wooden finished cladding on the exteriors and a sleek and modern interior in a neutral palette with accent furniture and upholstery. Catering to the requirement of a small family of four, the house consists of an open living, dining, kitchen, a sky lit courtyard, a media room and a covered terrace. Visual connectivity was a prime goal while planning out the spaces. Hence the volume of the house is punctured by two voids; one becomes a void above the courtyard which is covered by a skylight and the other in a covered void over the dining. A floating bridge extends into a small home gym that overlooks the courtyard. A slit in the slab along the double heighted dining wall sculpts the space with natural light. A Sky-lit recess clad in stone and perforated in a pixelated form creates a dramatic silhouette against the small landscape patch in the dining.
