The ‘Maathra’ residence is located in a residential area in the Wayanad district of Kerala. The house is built on a 30-cent slightly contoured rectangular plot. The client wanted to build their house with a minimal façade design in which they can easily relate to a typical home and with interior space arrangements which bring more interaction in the family. As the project name implies, the intention was to mold mixed volume of spaces at different levels to establish visual connections and interactions between the family members. Slop of the site is made used to create additional levels and the openness of the design enables light and ventilation throughout the day.

The landscape in the entrance area is designed such that it brings the evening sun rays from west side to the front yard through jali wall and the reflection from the waterbody making it a favourite spot for the family members during evenings. A formal living next to the verandah is followed by a large open space comprising an office, prayer area, staircase, dining and family living. All four bedrooms are accessed from this space on two different levels. Except for the formal living which is for guests, all other main areas are well-visually connected and opens to this large open space, thus bringing more transparency inside the house. Pockets of green spaces, add to the overall visual quality.
