Embracing Harmony: A Farmhouse Project that Celebrates Coexistence

Set amongst the hilly landscapes of central Kerala, this farmhouse project explores the dynamic relationship between architecture and nature. The family of four own this 3 acre farm where they practice intensive organic farming. They took inspiration from clients intertwined relationship with the site and context as a guiding factor in design. Embracing an open-plan design, the farmhouse not only facilitates a multifunctional usage of space but also reinforces the importance of interdependence between human living spaces and the surrounding ecosystem. This project is about harmonious coexistence between the built environment and the natural landscape.

The farmhouse design begins with a deep appreciation for the existing natural elements of the site. The architectural layout seamlessly integrates with the context, built environment and the human connections with the site. The built environment blurs into the context through multifunctional buffer spaces which feature as patios, courtyards and atrium spaces in design.

At the core of the farmhouse project is the commitment to an open-plan design. The traditional boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces are blurred, creating a fluid transition between the built structure and the natural surroundings. As the client regularly hosts prayer gatherings and informal meetings, the house is designed as two secluded halves connected by an open bridge. The west half accommodates the public spaces and the east half accommodates the core family spaces.

The living, dining, and kitchen areas flow seamlessly, fostering a sense of communal living and encouraging social interactions. The open plan not only enhances the spaciousness of the interior but also invites ample natural light and ventilation, minimizing the need for artificial lighting and climate control. The living rooms are designed as double volumes for thermal comfort in the single storey house.

The farmhouse goes beyond conventional living spaces, envisioning a dynamic environment that serves multiple purposes. Flexibility is embedded in the design, allowing rooms to adapt to changing needs. For example, the atrium space which is a drying yard for the farm produce in the mornings transforms into a social gathering space in the evening. This adaptability not only maximizes the utility of the space but also reflects the ever-changing rhythms of the clients lifestyle.

The farmhouse project places a strong emphasis on interdependence, recognizing the reciprocal relationship between humans and their environment. Sustainable practices, such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy utilization, and the integration of local materials, underscore the commitment to reducing the ecological footprint. Additionally, the farmhouse encourages residents to actively engage with the surrounding farmland. The hands-on landscape is conceived as a mix of vernacular productive plants and formal aesthetic landscapes. This reduces maintenance and the landscape engages with the client.
