A Marriage of Modernity and Tradition In the heart of Indore, Aakar Ajwani Architects embarked on a captivating design journey to create a warm and inviting haven for a multi-generational family of six. With a design style we affectionately term "Contemporary Indian," our mission was clear: to blend the modern with the Indian, forging an authentic connection between the family's heritage and our shared vision of a modern home. "House of Linens and Lime" was born – an oasis of calm amidst the bustling cityscape.

The client's heartfelt brief resonated deeply with us. They yearned for a contemporary dwelling that exuded unmistakably Indian warmth – a home where three generations could coexist harmoniously. As our muse, we honoured the family's history, especially the patriarch's four-decade journey in fabric production. This profound connection to textiles became our foundation, inspiring us to weave fabrics into the very essence of the house. We crafted fabrics into unconventional forms, adorning doors, walls, murals, partitions, and even merging seamlessly with the wooden fluted wall panelling.

The spatial configuration, meticulously planned, allowed communal spaces to fluidly blend into one another while preserving their distinct identities. This harmonious choreography, a testament to our vision, brought life to the 45-foot-wide canvas of common areas. The Drawing, Living, and Dining Rooms intertwine seamlessly, with the kitchen as a culinary oasis on one side and the Verandah as an outdoor sanctuary on the other. In contrast, the four bedrooms are discreetly nestled, accessible through a welcoming foyer, ensuring a cocoon of privacy for each member. In the Vestibule, we crafted a bespoke brass panel, a masterpiece of custom design, and mirrored its exquisite essence in the farthest corner of the Dining room, forging a subtle yet powerful connection. The rhythm of black wave stone danced gracefully, adorning each table in the common areas, adding a touch of intrigue and sophistication. Hues of Blue and Orange, skillfully woven into tapestries, art pieces, and delicate glass panels, wove together a captivating visual narrative that unfolded throughout the environment.

Undoubtedly, the path to realization was marked by challenges. Coming from a design background with its own established standards, we innocently assumed uniform quality expectations. However, our early ventures into new territories presented hurdles in achieving the desired finesse. With unwavering determination, we engaged in extensive on-site workshops, conducted mock-ups, and fostered active collaboration with the execution team. In the end, our shared dedication yielded the desired results.

The materials we selected became the poetic elements of our design narrative. Beige Italian Marble graced the floors, seamlessly connecting all spaces. Lime texture adorned the walls, juxtaposing the lustrous marble with rustic charm. Wooden details and veneers contributed warmth to individual spaces, while brass details added a contemporary contrast to the wooden elements. Colored back-painted glass emerged as an artistic highlight in multiple spaces. And amidst it all, we considered landscape as a material, introducing unique plants to each space, breathing life into our interiors. Our exploration led us to embrace modern details infused with traditionally cherished materials. The fusion of brass, vibrant glass, and rare stones orchestrated a harmonious blend throughout the entire residence.

Our shared vision with the clients was to create an earthy abode. Earthy lime walls served as a unifying backdrop, with each space receiving its own distinct color palette. Common areas embraced the vibrant hues of orange and blue, extending from tapestries to custom artworks. The parents' room exuded soothing tones of brown and rust, while the master bedroom enveloped itself in shades of calming greens. The children's room, a burst of youthful energy, featured yellow highlights in the headboard, seamlessly connecting to the back-painted glass of the study unit.

Among the treasures of this project, one stands out – a coffee table like no other. Over the course of a month, we meticulously crafted a multifunctional design composed of various parts which served myriad purposes. These parts, fashioned with varying proportions and materials, can be thoughtfully arranged throughout the living room, adapting to specific needs. Yet, they harmoniously unite, seamlessly forming a cohesive whole when their collective purpose is not required. This epitomizes our commitment to both form and function.

We paid homage to Indian craftsmanship by designing and handcrafting most of the pieces within the home. Every door handle, meticulously carved from solid wood on-site, speaks to our dedication to detail. We ingeniously concealed doors within teak wood paneling, enhancing the overall aesthetics while promoting the works of Indian artisans. The temple is another element which merges contemporary with traditional. We used a rough local sandstone and embellished it with intricate brass detailing. An ornate horizontal shelf was incorporated, reminiscent of the intricate carvings found in Indian temples.

In conclusion, "House of Linens and Lime" is more than just a home; it's a testament to the fusion of dreams and design. We've celebrated the legacy of fabrics, harmonized modernity with tradition, and painted a canvas of earthy elegance. This project is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to creating spaces that resonate with the soul, where family heritage thrives alongside contemporary comfort – a true oasis of calm in the heart of Indore.
