Creating a well-designed living space is crucial for senior citizens to ensure their comfort, safety, and independence. Designing an interior for a senior citizen client, in this case, presents a unique and deeply rewarding challenge. The objective is to create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also exceptionally functional and accommodating to the evolving needs of an older individual. The design concept I propose revolves around three key principles: Comfort, Safety, and Personalization.

Comfort is paramount in the design of this apartment living space. Every element of the design contributed to physical and emotional comfort. This includes selecting furniture that is not only stylish but also ergonomic. Chairs and sofas with proper lumbar support, adjustable features, and easy ingress and egress are essential. Soft, inviting textures, such as plush cushions and warm throws, contribute to a cosy atmosphere.

Safety is a non-negotiable aspect of this project. The environment they kept free from potential hazards and actively prevent accidents. Slip-resistant bathroom flooring and well-placed grab bars, and night lighting are crucial. The absence of tripping hazards, like rugs with non-slip backings and cordless blinds, is incorporated. Additionally, smart home technology integrated to enhance safety, with features such as automated lighting and surveillance systems.

The design, here reflected clients personal tastes, interests, and lifestyle. Engaging both of them in the design process is vital to ensure that the space feels like their own. The choice of colours, furnishings, and decor resonated with them, creating a sense of belonging and comfort. Personal touches, such as family photos, cherished heirlooms, and artwork, thoughtfully integrated into the design to evoke a sense of nostalgia and continuity.

In addition to these core principles, the design embraced "Universal Design" concepts, making the space accessible and adaptable. Wider doorways, lever-style door handles, and adjustable shelving contribute to the overall functionality and inclusivity of the design. This design concept is not static but flexible, acknowledging that senior citizen’s need may change over time. The layout allowed for easy modifications or additions to accommodate future requirements, such as the potential need for a home office, additional storage, or medical equipment.

Clean lines, openness, spaciousness, and maintainable aesthetics define this simple apartment for an elderly couple.

In conclusion, designing an interior for a senior citizen client like a deeply personal and empathetic process. It required a deep understanding of the client's needs, tastes, and future expectations. By prioritizing comfort, safety, and personalization, while adhering to universal design principles, we created an environment that nurtures well-being and enriches their life, making their home a haven where they can age with grace and dignity.
