House in Between is a multi-generational family home built for a NRI couple. clients had specific desires for their new home, that seamlessly incorporates the tropical climatic conditions of the region, feature a minimalist design approach and establish a separation between public and private spaces.

HinB's location on a former coconut plantation or 'Thenginthopp' near Perinthalmanna town provides an interesting backdrop. The site was initially planned to be divided into two sections, with the area adjoining the road reserved for commercial development and the rest for the house. However, as the design process evolved, the section close to the road took on a new purpose as a multipurpose garden space. This area now serves as a play area for kids and provides additional parking space. The landscaping here features a variety of trees with lush foliage, functioning both as a buffer and a natural shading element.

The architectural concept and form of the house evolves from a set of varying rectangular volumes that have been strategically positioned in a grid. The emphasis on these volumes and the resulting in-between spaces indicates a successful attempt to create a balance between openness and privacy, which is crucial for a multi-generational family home. These masses form a stepping morphology that is climate responsive maximizing natural ventilation, sunlight, and shading. This approach enhances the comfort and well-being of the residents while reducing the need for excessive artificial cooling or heating.

The entrance to the House in Between is through a floating car porch that leads to a linear Verandah, reminiscent of the traditional ‘Poomugham’. Upon entering through the front double doors made of Nilambur teak wood, one steps into the formal living area with high ceiling. The space features a U-shaped seating arrangement oriented towards a TV unit. The ample use of full-height windows and linear skylights serves to bring the surrounding greenery and the sky's openness into the living space. While in the formal living area, glimpses of the adjacent stairs and patio can be caught in the corner of the room, adding an element of visual interest and interaction between spaces. The stair area is a double-height transition zone that serves multiple functions. It acts as a service area, a family living space, and a foyer that connects to the private quarters of the house. The base of the stair flight is constructed using solid masonry topped with granite, which not only serves as a seating area but also functions as a planter, contributing to the overall aesthetic.

The ‘L’ shaped staircase consists of teak wood plank treads that lead to both the mezzanine level and the first-floor bedrooms. Moving on, the dining area and kitchen are integrated within a linear volume, following an open floor plan. The dining area is thoughtfully connected to patios on its sides, effectively blending indoor and outdoor spaces and allowing the natural environment to influence the interiors. The parents bedroom and the master bedroom are strategically placed opposite to each other for convenient access and privacy. This arrangement likely reflects the consideration for the elder generation's comfort and needs. This also minimizes the need to navigate stairs and offers ease of access. Moving to the mezzanine level, the design shifts to accommodate the kids' bedroom and the aesthetic tone takes on a vibrant and playful character. This change in aesthetics likely caters to the energetic and imaginative nature of children, making their space engaging and enjoyable. The first floor of the house features a bedroom that mirrors the dimensions of the master bedroom on the ground floor. Design incorporates storage and study areas within each room, maximizing  functionality while maintaining a cohesive design language throughout the house.
