Site for the residence is located in an urban village in the outskirts of Pune City, where Indian moderate climate is witnessed. Client, being a respected politician and educationalist, has many number of group meetings with local people as a part of his daily routine. So he intended to create comfortable environment for the people visiting him, without disturbing privacy of his family members. There was also a requirement to adhere to, the principles of Vastu, the ancient Indian science of energy flow and placement. So, clearly this residence had to be a mix of traditional architecture fulfilling the needs of culture and climatology, with modern facilities, still giving a feel of the era in which it is built.

Inspired from the traditional Wada Architecture of Maharashtra, all the habitable spaces have been planned around a central courtyard to allow natural lighting, ventilation and visual connection between the floors. Entrance verandah (referred as “Padavi” in Marathi Language), has been treated with the use of natural materials, welcoming its visitors with humble nature. This is the place where people can gather and informal meetings can happen.

Living and dining spaces have been planned in continuation with each other, using courtyard to virtually segregate them giving enough privacy for dining. Kitchen is planned in the south east corner, wherein courtyard between verandah and kitchen has played important role in cutting down visual connection from outside to inside, but not vice versa due to change in levels. The south west and Northwest corners of the house comprise of the bedrooms, that leads to semi-covered landscaped courts and balconies. The residence enjoys large terrace with open to sky and semi open patios accessed from the Family space on the upper floor.

The material palette comprises of local natural stones (like Basalt, Kota, Tandur, etc.), wood as a base and the white walls and sloping roof emerging from it on the upper floor. Sloping roof elevation is achieved with the help of sleek edged combination of MS framing on the periphery of the RCC slab, and mangalore tile roofing system giving it a feel of a house in the farm.

The landscape design on this 5000 sq.ft. open space around the home connects the built spaces with the outside environment in seamless way. Vernacular style of landscape complements Wada style architecture. Front yard (referred as “Aangan” in Marathi language) being public zone, offers open space along with extended view for family events & gatherings.  Wherein, backyards (reffered as “Prasdar”) offer serene private gardens, as an extension of bedrooms. Bamboo screen planting & pergola in backyard gives sense of coziness along with the visual privacy from surrounding upcoming high rise structures to this private garden.

So all in all, simple forms and materials existing in the regional context, have been interpreted in the architecture of the house, keeping in mind the kind of impression this house will give with reference to the image of the family in the society, fulfilling their social, cultural and personal requirements.
