A 50-year-old bay leaf tree, the sole tree on the site, stands majestically amid a tapioca plantation. The tree holds cherished memories for Mr. Nidin and Mrs. Lekshmi, who built their home in its shadow for their children, Nila and Nilav. The house is named "BAY LEAF”.

Built on a 20-cent plot, the land gracefully descends approximately 20 feet along its length, setting the stage for a thoughtfully designed house that spans various levels, each uniquely shaped by the natural topography. The meticulous adjustment of the site's gradient was executed with precision, prioritizing minimal disruption to the existing conditions. This careful approach not only respects the environment but also establishes a harmonious relationship between the structure and the natural slope.

The result is a residence that unfolds within a verdant haven, characterized by its multi-tiered arrangement of spaces. The architectural design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Each interior level effortlessly connects with a corresponding layer of the outdoor environment, creating a fluid transition between the built environment and nature.

At the pinnacle of this interconnected design, the venerable bay leaf tree stands proudly, maintaining its elevated position as the heart of the residence. This strategic placement ensures a continuous connection with communal areas, allowing the tree to become a focal point that not only adds natural beauty but also serves as a constant reminder of the site's history and the cherished memories held by its inhabitants. In essence, the house becomes a living tribute to the landscape, where architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony.

The entryway effortlessly expands the interior living area into the surrounding outdoor canopy, characterized by an open and porous structure. An uninterrupted linear corridor runs alongside the outdoor landscape and the courtyard, sunlight filters through, casting a warm glow on the lush greenery and the exposed-brick living structures. The house is strategically divided into layers of living spaces, with a staircase descending from elevated public areas to semi-private zones and simultaneously ascending to family spaces, including the kids' room and home theatre. This design creates a seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces, enriching the perception of the surroundings at different times of the day. The interplay of light and space enhances the depth of the living experience, providing a dynamic and integrated living environment that adapts to the changing conditions of nature.

The lower levels of the house boast a meticulously designed kitchen, specifically tailored to accommodate the dynamics of an Indian joint family. The introduction of an open kitchen concept has proven to be a resounding success. This innovative design fosters equal interaction among family members during meal preparations, creating a communal atmosphere that goes beyond the act of cooking. It accommodates studying children, allowing them to engage in their academic pursuits while remaining connected to the family hub. The open kitchen also provides a relaxing environment for the grandmother, allowing her to oversee activities while enjoying a comfortable and social space. Navigating through the corridor linking the children's spaces above with the family gathering area below, the children's bedroom stands out as a dynamic space curated to accommodate a range of activities. The bed area is strategically positioned between an indoor courtyard and a raised attic floor, creating a multifunctional environment that caters to the diverse needs and interests of the young occupants.

Orienting the house along East-West axis, walls are strategically aligned to accommodate wind movement and provide ventilation while shielding the interiors from the tropical sun for effective thermal control. Reclaimed old wooden planks from a demolished house have been thoughtfully repurposed for the staircase and other openings, adding character to the design and no trees were cut for the construction of this house.
