Tucked within the bustling city centre, “ATHULYAM – அதுல்யம்” finds its place in a coveted locale. Encircled by the vibrant presence of nearby urban abodes, it is sought to resonate with contemporary aesthetics, a space where clean lines and minimalist elegance converge seamlessly. However, this aspiration for a contemporary haven was to be realized within the confines of a constrained budget. The challenge lay in curating an ambiance that breathes modernity while keeping a keen eye on the space requirements by the client. The brief was to accommodate a 2BHK villa in the ground floor for rental purpose and a 3BHK duplex for the client’s family.

The façade has been carefully crafted with a warm palette of materials and textures. To retain privacy at ground level, a denser brick jali is used whereas

first floor has much lighter look with wooden textured aluminium panels. These dynamic panels cast a mesmerizing play of light and shadows into the adjacent

sit out spaces.

The layout of the house revolves around a thoughtful spatial arrangement. A compact two-bedroom house with ample parking space constitutes the ground floor. The open sit-out space at first floor is exquisitely designed, featuring a pergola adorned with creatively arranged jali blocks, evoking the illusion of drifting the clouds above. Then comes the expansive living room seamlessly accommodates the puja room, an internal staircase, a dining area, and a modern kitchen, all within the inviting space.

The puja area embraces a simple and minimalistic approach, achieved by utilizing two standalone granite slabs enriched with subtle grooves. Following an open concept, the kitchen and dining is strategically placed with storage spaces that also acts as partition between the living and kitchen. An elegant horizontal ribbon window lights up this olive themed space maintaining connection to the street. Both the staircases were envisioned with unique concepts. The external one being a light structure blending granite with RCC, while the internal staircase features a beautiful fusion of metal and wood, presenting a captivating interplay of materials and styles. In contrast to the typical RCC folded plate style, the exterior staircase is unique as it twists at an angle, elegantly supporting the granite on top in a linear fashion. This unique configuration imparts a sensation of floating treads, providing an intriguing and modern experience to the user. Small lung spaces under the staircase are well utilised for various purposes.

A charming addition to the second floor is a small open terrace, designed as common space making it a cozy spot for the family to enjoy celestial views. The colour themed bedroom spaces are thoughtfully designed with a minimalistic aesthetic, featuring clean lines and a serene ambiance. The accomplished spatial configuration expertly blends communal living with individual privacy, crafting a harmonious and functional living environment for the residents. Each aspect of the design was carefully crafted to ensure that the layout catered precisely to client’s distinct needs and visions, all within the framework of contemporary design language with the essence of minimalism.
